I'm a crazy cat lady on too much caffeine and not enough sleep, move along, nothing to see here. Laugh at certainly....Collapse )

I am not drunk. I got a massage. Not really the thing to do when you have/are just getting over a cold, but I was near my usual place and they were empty and my back was a little achy and, yeah, no, could've stopped at "I was near my usual place."

After the interview, which was not a job interview but registering with a recruiter, I finally made my way downtown to pick up the replacement lenses. (The 400th or so time I dropped them, I scratched the lenses, right where I couldn't ignore it. On both sides! And of course this 400th time was like a week after not only didn't I have health insurance, but COBRA was no longer an option.) They'd been sitting there since before Dragon*Con, but right before DCON I got a fluffy little rotavirus that was all black and shiny and really must have liked me a lot because it didn't leave for a week. And then there was DCON. And there was the sleeping, because that doesn't happen at cons. And then there was the headcold. So yeah, this really was the first opportunity I had to get it.

Procrastinator, who me? *checks name of LJ* Oh. Right.

As I was walking to the interview, my feet were killing me. I was sliding in the shoes, and the socks were giving me like cotton burn or something. Rug burn but on the bottom of your feet, in your shoes. First thing I could, I took the socks off. I thought I could wear them through the interview, but not so much. Lost them before I'd finished the 8ish block walk from subway to building. After the interview, my feet hurt, independent of the by-then resolved sock issue.

Really I don't know why I'm allowed to go shoe shopping alone. No good comes of it.

Blissed out by the massage, I stopped for a latte, and then read porn on the train ride home. Life is good.

Tomorrow the city is turning the water off in the building as they muck with things outside (roadway construction, or rather demolition: they're adding lanes to the highway and for some reason that process involves removing lanes from street level overpasses.

Plotting is Like Sex

Plotting is Like Sex

Plotting is like sex. Plotting is about desire and satisfaction, anticipation and release. You have to arouse your reader’s desire to know what happens, to unravel the mystery, to see good triumph. You have to sustain it, keep it warm, feed it, just a little bit, not too much at a time, as your story goes on. That’s called suspense. It can bring desire to a frenzy, in which case you are in a good position to bring off a wonderful climax.

COLIN GREENLAND

He wears red

He wears one article of red clothing. Always. Everywhere. It's not really a conscious choice anymore, but he has never been able to get dressed with out wearing at least a little red, not for as long as he's been picking out his own clothes. In the 90s, his Seattle coffee drinking, clove cigarette smoking days, he wore the uniform of flannel over tee, with jeans and Docs. Red flannel, always red flannel. He didn't have to hide it in college, but it had to get more subtle after graduation. In business suits, it's a tie, or the stripe in his dress shirt, or maybe the socks. (He'd never think to buy himself red boxers, but has been known to wear such things when given them as gifts by a significant other.) As much as he likes to pretend he hasn't become That Kind of Guy, he is a member of the conspicuous consumption crowd. The time that Fiona accidentally-on-purpose bleached his reds pink just a week before admitting she'd been cheating on him and was trying to get him to dump her, he contacted a runner service to replace them. All. In just under a couple of hours. (He paid extra for speed.)

And knitting is a disease. I've been infected. I stayed up for like 3 hrs after when I should've gone to bed creating a knitting pattern for a scarf. With the Torchwood logo, the honeycombed T, on it. Dork!

Knit across for 6 rows

Mom’s blue hat

This was knit flat using 29” circulars for two reasons: 1) I knit during my commute and on public transportation, where I’m not likely to get a seat, using circulars is just easier and 2) I was figuring out the pattern as I worked and that’s harder when knitting in the round. The first time I did this I had to add about 5 inches (40 stitches) after I completed most of the hat, because it was much too small around.

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool, 100 g/ skein, New Denim
Tools: US size 4 (3.5 mm) - circulars, standard, or double pointed needles (dpns); 1-2 stitch markers; Tapestry needle
Gauge: 8 stitches (K4, P4) X 10 rows = 1" x 1" square
Stitches: CB4 = holding cable needle in back of work pass 2 to cable needle, k2, knit stitches on cable needle

Credits: Design was inspired by weezalana’s Lucky 7 Hat: http://knittywhipped.blogspot.com/2008/01/free-patterns-one-and-all.html. Bind off is based on Silja’s Smart Hat: http://silja-devine.com/?p=28

Cast on 152 stitches. I knit this flat; if magic looping, join and knit in the round. Work should measure 19” flat, 9.5” folded if knit in the round.

Row 1 - 30: (K4, P4) repeat across for approx. 30 rows or until it measures 3”.
Don’t knit too tightly. You want it to have some give. To help me keep track, I set a stitch marker in the middle of the 10th row. When I hit 20 rows, I set another stitch marker.
Row 31: Cable all the knit ribs. (CB4, P4.) After you complete row 31, set the stitch marker.

Every 5th row: Cable the first 5 knit ribs. Switch off between CB4 and CF4. On row 31 you CB4, so on row 36 do a CF4.
Every 11th row: Cable every knit rib CB4.
All other rows: K4, P4.

Repeat until the work measures 10". Assuming you didn’t cable the brim (the 3" band), you'll get 7 cable twists in all but the first 5 knit sections; there you’ll have about 19 or so.

After the work measures 10”, start the decreases. I started my decreases 5 K4, P4 rows after a 11th row cable.

Cut yarn and draw through remaining stitches; if not knitting in the round, leave enough of a tail to mattress stitch the seam, joining the hat. Block if desired. Should measure 19” flat and fit a 21” – 23” head.

Smoking Cessation counter

EDIT About a week or two after I quit smoking, the price of cigs in NYC went up a lot, as much as $3/ pack, depending on where you buy. I redid my quitmeter on 07/16/2008 (11 weeks smoke-free!) calculating $8.50/ pack (up from the original estimate of $6.50). Still estimating a carton/ week.

I quit at midnight on April 30, 2008. EDIT I'm estimating 1 carton/ week, so about a pack and a half per day. /EDIT It's rough going but I intend to make it. This, day 5, is already the 3rd longest I've ever managed to quit! (I quit once for a day, once for a week, and once for about 6 months.)

Ok, for perhaps the 2nd or 3rd time since I started my LJ, I've done a friends list purge. It's not personal, I mostly cut old journals that haven't been updated in a long time, or journals of people I don't keep in contact with any more. There will likely be a more thorough purging soon. I think I'm gonna cut at least 1 person whom I care for, simply because I can't deal with her scrolling posts anymore. LJ cut people!

Hi,
My Mom's doctor recommended that she try Euflexxa, delivered by injection into her knees, to aliviate pain. She's got arthritis and diabetes and was struck by a car (pedestrian) 2.5 yrs ago, is still suffering from the after affects of that.

Have you heard of the drug, have any experiencee with it? She really doesn't want to do the needle thing.

Thanks.
